A free online virus scan is pretty much what it sounds like: an online-based, free scan for viruses and other malware. This kind of virus scan differs from your traditional virus scanning program because all the work is done on a server on the internet.
Every online virus scan site does this a little differently. Some let you upload a file for scanning, others check websites for links that contain malware, and still others install browser add-ons or other small programs that scan your entire computer but do the behind-the-scenes work online.
Free online virus scanners are good options for one-off virus scans if installing a full-fledged antivirus program isn't an option for some reason, or maybe just for an extra layer of precaution.
Regardless of why you're using one, each of the free online virus scan services listed below are completely free! They're ordered by ease of use and functionality.
An online virus scanner will only check for viruses, not actually remove any that it finds. Visit the link above for a traditional virus scanner program that can not only check for viruses but also completely delete them from your computer.
You can also use an on-demand virus scanner for another layer of protection, or a bootable antivirus tool if your computer won't start because of the virus.

VirusTotalWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
You can upload a specific file to VirusTotal to have it scanned by various antivirus engines or enter a website address to have VirusTotal scan an entire page for malicious links. Also supported is IP address, domain, and file hash scanning.
Archives like ZIP and RAR can be uploaded but the maximum acceptable size for any file type is 550 MB.
A browser extension is also available for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer users that allow URLs to be scanned from the right-click menu and files to be checked for viruses before downloading them.
Another handy feature with the VirusTotal online virus scanner is that it works through email, too, meaning that you can attach a file to the message and send it to [email protected] to have it scanned.

MetaDefender CloudWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
MetaDefender Cloud (previously called Metascan Online) is a slick website that allows files up to 140 MB to be uploaded and scanned against 30+ different antivirus engines at once, including ones used by popular vendors like Microsoft, Kaspersky, McAfee, and AVG.
A few files you might be interested in scanning at MetaDefender Cloud could be 7Z, EXE, and ZIP, but you can scan others, too, like images, videos, and documents.
In addition to uploading a file to MetaDefender Cloud, it can also scan by IP address, hash value, and website URL.
Results are really easy to read; a bright green checkmark is placed next to each antivirus engine that identifies a file as safe, and a red mark with the virus name if it's found to be malicious.
There's also the OPSWAT File Security for Chrome extension you can install to scan downloads made through that browser.

AviraWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
Avira's online virus scanner uses the same antivirus engine as the popular Avira AntiVirus program to scan submitted files and URLs through an online form.
The form asks for your contact details so the URL of the results can be sent to you. A maximum of five files no larger than 50 MB each can be uploaded.

Jotti's Malware ScanWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
Over a dozen antivirus engines are used to scan up to five files at a time (with a 100 MB limit for each) that you upload to Jotti's Malware Scan.
The date and scan detection status of each antivirus engine is shown in an easy to read list so you can clearly see which ones did or didn't find the file to be dangerous.
You can't (directly) merge 2 partitions. The 'Extend Volume' option is greyed out because it has no available space adjacent to the partition, making C bigger would overlap with D, which is a full fledged partition (it is just empty, but that does not matter, that space is reserved for it anyways). The solution is to delete the volume D, and apply changes, so that region of the disk becomes unallocated space instead. In any case, there are some changes that you cannot do to a partition when booting from it. The easiest solution for this problem is to just use a live SO that does not need to make use of the partition you want to modify, like the open source utility gparted: (you can burn a bootable CD/USB to use this utility). Disk management options greyed out.
Jotti.org also includes a hash search if you wish not to upload a file but instead, enter the MD5 or SHA-1/256/512 cryptographic hash function of a file. This will only work if the file was scanned by Jotti.org at an earlier date, by you or someone else.
Scanning is possible from your desktop, too, with the JottiScan program.
Jotti's Malware Scan is sometimes busy, making you wait in a line before your file can be processed.

Kaspersky VirusDeskFind My Scans FileWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
Kaspersky has an online virus scanner, too, that supports both files and URLs. A file you upload to this online virus scanner can be as large as 50 MB.
The website couldn't be easier to use. Just paste the link or select the attachment icon to upload a file. Pressing SCAN starts the virus scan and the results are shown on the same page.
If a threat is detected, Kaspersky VirusDesk will say 'Threats detected in <file>' and show the threat name and other details. Otherwise, you'll see a clean, 'No threats detected' message.

FortiGuard Online ScannerWhat We Like
What We Don't Like
Upload a file to FortiGuard Online Scanner for a quick check against its scanner.
After you upload the file, enter your name and email address in case they need to send you a message about the file. After you submit the file for review, wait for the page to refresh and you'll see the results at the top.
Files uploaded to this online virus scanner can only be as large as 1 MB.

Metadefender for Chrome is a free browser extension for Google Chrome that you can use to run security scans on files before downloading them.
Metadefender is a popular malware analysis service that scans files that you upload to it against more than 40 different antivirus and threat detection engines.

It works in this regard like Virustotal, but adds a couple of extra options to the process. Apart from the 140 Megabyte per file upload limit -- Virustotal's maximum size for files is set to 128 Megabyte -- it is extracting files and listing all files of the archive.
Even better, Metadefender will scan each file of an archive individually to display results for each after the scan and analysis completes.
Metadefender for Chrome
Metadefender for Chrome makes the whole process more comfortable. You can right-click on any file that is directly linked on public Internet sites to have it scanned by Metadefender directly.
![]()
That's better than having to download a file first, going to the Metadefender website, uploading the file to the service, and waiting for it to be processed.
The one caveat is that it works only with files that are linked directly. If a site uses JavaScript or other means to protect files from hotlinking, you will get scan errors when using the extension.
You may still use the manual method then to have it scanned by Metadefender though.
The extension works as you'd expect it to. You right-click on any directly linked file and select the 'scan with Metadefender before downloading' option from the context menu.
The Metadefender site is opened in a new browser tab if the process works. If it does not, you get a notification in Chrome that something went wrong. While you can try again, you will probably have to scan it manually as it is likely that trying repeatedly won't work either.
The results are identical to the ones that you get when you upload files manually to the service. Metadefender lists the score at the top, and information about the file, and if it is an archive, the files it contains on that page.
File information include hashes, and options to look at scan results for each extracted file of archives individually.
Metadefender for Chrome installs in Firefox if you follow this guide, but it does not work right now as you will run into scan errors when you try to use it.
The extension adds an icon to the Chrome toolbar that you can use to open your scan history. This opens a page on the Metadefender website that lists all file scans that initiated from the Chrome extension.
Closing Words
The browser extension is quite useful if you download files regularly from sites that link to them directly. If you don't, or if the download sites that you are using use scripts to block direct links to the downloads, then you won't be able to make much use of Metadefender for Chrome.

I have been using Mozilla Firefox as my primary web browser for years and have installed several extensions to improve the web browsing experience. Since I need to test new software on a regular basis, I use the VirusTotal service to scan the developer’s page as well as the software for viruses and other threats before clicking the download link.
Many of the computer users regularly use VirusTotal’s service to scan software and URLs for viruses. I recently noticed that most users manually visit the VirusTotal website then paste the URL to scan it against threats. Some users use the VirusTotal uploader to upload and scan the downloaded file.
What many users don’t aware is that one can actually scan files for virus and other threats even before downloading them on to your PC by installing a simple browser extension, meaning you don’t need to manually upload a file to VirusTotal service to scan files using over 60 antivirus engines.
VirusTotal extension for Chrome and Firefox
It seems that many users are not aware of the official VirusTotal extension available for popular web browsers. The official VirusTotal extension available for Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox aims to simplify the process of scanning URLs and files using VirusTotal.
NOTE: The extension doesn’t work great on Internet Explorer (Windows 10 & 8.1) for some reasons but it works flawlessly on Firefox and Chrome.
Once VirusTotal extension is installed, you’ll be able to scan a link (URL) with a click. To scan a link on a webpage, all you need to do is right-click on the link and then click Scan with VirusTotal option to start analysing the link using VirusTotal.
Likewise, when you click a download link, you’ll see Scan with VirusTotal button in addition to Save File and Cancel buttons. Clicking Scan with Virus Total will begin the scan.
Please note that when you install the extension in Firefox, it will add VirusTotal toolbar, which you can easily turn off by right-clicking and then unchecking VirusTotal toolbar option.
The Chrome extension also works in a similar way. If you regularly download files from the web using Chrome or Firefox browser, we suggest you install this official VirusTotal extension to quickly scan suspicious URLs and files before downloading. This is a must have extension if you don’t have a solid antivirus or internet security software installed on your PC.
Visit the following link to install VirusTotal extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. As of now, the extension doesn’t support Microsoft Edge in Windows 10.
